For this I'll use a project I was doing to demo. Navigate to the EC2 dashboard in the AWS Management Console. Select "Load Balancers" and click "Create Load Balancer". In the network mapping section I chose the 2 public subnets I created in the VPC configuration.

Add listeners for HTTP or HTTPS traffic then assign a security group to allow appropriate inbound traffic (e.g., port 80 or 443).

Create a target group for the listener and register instances or other targets.. The one I created had 2 EC2 instances deployed in 2 availability zones.

Define health check paths, intervals, and thresholds to monitor target availability. Finally, set up rules for path-based or host-based routing to direct traffic to the correct target groups. After reviewing and creating the ALB, it’s ready to distribute traffic.

When using an Application Load Balancer (ALB), AWS charges based on:

 You pay for every hour the ALB is active.

 Additional costs apply based on the volume of data transferred through the ALB.

Avoid leaving ALBs running when they aren’t needed, such as in development environments.

They act as a first line of defense, allowing or denying traffic based on specified rules. When you launch an EC2 instance or configure other AWS services, you associate them with one or more security groups, effectively setting the rules for what type of traffic can interact with those resources.

In the AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Associate (SAA) exam, understanding Security Groups is critical as you'll find them mentioned in questions related to network security, EC2 instance management, and overall VPC configuration.

They define what traffic is allowed to and from resources, ensuring only authorized users and systems can interact with your applications.

Security Groups help reduce the attack surface by blocking unauthorized traffic at the network level. 

They streamline the management of network security policies with reusable rules and flexible association options

For the SAA exam, expect scenarios where you’ll need to decide between Security Groups and other mechanisms like Network ACLs, and justify why Security Groups are better suited for certain use cases.

Default Security Group vs. Custom Security Groups

When a VPC is created, a default security group is automatically created. This group allows all inbound traffic from resources within the same group and allows all outbound traffic by default.

Custom security groups are user-defined and tailored to specific needs, such as restricting access to certain IPs or ports.

, meaning that if an inbound rule allows traffic, the return traffic is automatically allowed without explicitly specifying an outbound rule.

For example, if you allow inbound traffic on port 22 (SSH), the outbound response to that traffic is automatically permitted.

The stateful nature of Security Groups is an important differentiator with Network ACLs, which are stateless and require explicit rules for both inbound and outbound traffic.

It's quite easy to create a security group on the AWS Management Console. Once logged in, search for the EC2 service. A confusion I used to have was thinking that security groups is an service but it's actually a feature of other services. You can create and configure security groups on other services such as RDS, ELB or EKS.

Once on the EC2 interface, you'll find Security Groups on the Network and Security section on the side panel. Click on the 'Create Security Group' button and you should see an interface like the one below:


I'll create a security group to manage traffic for a web application. So in the inbound traffic section, I will allow 

 traffic to allow remote connection to my EC2 intance via ssh.

The ports are automatically filled in for these protocols and I chose the CIDR blocks to allow traffic from.

You can optionally add a tag. Click the orange 'Create Security Group'  button and that just about it! 

Remember that Security Groups are stateful so they will allow outbound traffic for whatever inbound traffic we allowed.

Use security groups to allow database access (e.g., RDS or ElastiCache) only from specific IP addresses or subnets, such as application servers within your VPC. For example, allow inbound traffic on port 3306 (MySQL) or 5432 (PostgreSQL) from a trusted IP range.

 Restrict SSH (port 22) or RDP (port 3389) access to specific admin IP addresses to minimize exposure to unauthorized users.

Configure distinct security groups for each layer of your application (web, application, and database layers).

Allow inbound traffic from the internet on ports 80 (HTTP) and 443 (HTTPS).

Restrict traffic to only accept requests from the web tier's security group.

 Allow inbound traffic only from the application tier on the database port, such as 3306 (MySQL).

This approach isolates each layer, reducing the attack surface.

Use security groups to define cross-region traffic rules for resources communicating between VPCs in different regions. For example, allow only specific IP ranges or security group IDs to ensure that only trusted traffic flows between the regions.
